Abraham also “disappears” from the life of Ishmael in Chapter 20, to the extent that the young man’s mother, Hagar, has to find wives for him. (20:21) Now that I think of it, why are the wives of Abraham’s sons chosen by persons of the servant class – Hagar in Chapter 20 and the servant in Chapter 24? Abraham seems to have chosen his own wife (11:29), Isaac’s sons select their own wives, and so does Judah.
