Num. 3:7 They shall perform duties for him and for the whole community before the Tent of Meeting, doing the work of the Tabernacle.

But how can the Tabernacle and the Tent of Meeting be the same thing when the Tent of Meeting existed — OUTSIDE the camp — before the Tabernacle was created?

Ex. 27:20 You shall further instruct the Israelites [ואתה תצוה את בני ישראל] to bring you clear oil of beaten olives for lighting, for kindling lamps regularly.

Why doesn’t God just tell Moses, “Instruct the Israelites [צו את בני ישראל]” as He does elsewhere?

Nahum Sarna:  The Tabernacle was exactly half the size of Solomon’s Temple in length and width and one-third its height.

But there is another Temple described in the Bible, in the book of Ezekiel, plus innumerable temples on the ground — now, under it — in the nearby countries of the ancient Near East.  Victor Hurowitz tells us about some of them in this week’s episode.

Exodus 2:1   A certain man of the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and she saw how beautiful he was [ותרא אותו כי טוב הוא] …

RASHI : How beautiful he was. When he was born, the whole house filled with light.

Where did Rashi get this notion from?  And what does it tell us about the book of Exodus as a whole?

How the creation of the Tabernacle matches the creation of the world — and WHY.

Jeffrey Tigay, “Exodus,” Jewish Study Bible

Thus was completed all the work of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting (Exod 39:32):  The phraseology (see also 40:33 n.) alludes to the completion of the creation of the world in Gen. 2:1, 3, one of several echoes of the Priestly source’s account of creation here in the Priestly account of the creation of the Tabernacle (see 25:1–31:17 n.).

Answer:  Like the Covenant Code in last week’s parashah, it’s an ancient Near Eastern thing.
