This is Torah Talk for the week of June 17th, 2018

Num. 21:27-30 is a poem in praise of an Amorite king, Sihon — whom Israel has just conquered!  What is this poem doing in the Bible?

Korah 5778

June 12, 2018

This is Torah Talk for the week of June 10th, 2018

Num. 17:25   The LORD said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back before the Pact, to be kept as a lesson to rebels, so that their mutterings against Me may cease, lest they die.” 26 This Moses did; just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did.

But … what happened to it, and to the jar of manna that was supposedly also there?

Shelach Lecha 5778

June 5, 2018

This is Torah Talk for the week of June 3rd, 2018

Numbers 14 – The Israelites are told they will die in the desert and only their children will enter the land.

Numbers 16 – The Korah Rebellion

And in between them … a bunch of miscellaneous laws.  What are they doing there?  And why are the laws so carefully integrated into Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy just tossed into Numbers any which way?

Num. 8:2

Moses is told to instruct Aaron, “When you mount the lamps, let the seven lamps give light at the front of the lampstand.”

But what does אל-מול פני המנורה really mean?  And where is the one surprising place it’s used outside of priestly literature?

Ha’azinu 5777-78

September 19, 2017

This is Torah Talk for the week of September 17th, 2017

Deut. 32:44    Moses came, together with Hosea son of Nun, and recited all the words of this poem in the hearing of the people.

The poem is Ha’azinu … but why is Joshua called Hosea?

Note:  I mistakenly said on the podcast that we would be reading Ha’azinu for a second week — but since Saturday afternoon September 23rd we have been “in” Parshat V’Zot Ha-Bracha.  That podcast, however, remains scheduled for Oct. 3rd, in time for the full reading on Oct. 5th or 6th (depending on which calendar you follow).

“Instruct the Israelite people to bring you a red cow without blemish, in which there is no defect and on which no yoke has been laid.”

Nili Fox, “Numbers,” Jewish Study Bible:  “Generations have puzzled over the color of this cow.”  But we’re going to puzzle over that … yoke.

The (so-called) “structure of the book of Numbers.

Nili Fox: “It is often difficult to determine the relationship between contiguous segments.”

David Frankel: “Davies concludes that the book has no coherent structure at all.”

Jacob Milgrom: “The position of chapter 19 is an enigma.”

[etc.]
