Shemot 5778

January 2, 2018

This is Torah Talk for the week of December 31st, 2017

Exodus 2:1   A certain man of the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and she saw how beautiful he was [ותרא אותו כי טוב הוא] …

RASHI : How beautiful he was. When he was born, the whole house filled with light.

Where did Rashi get this notion from?  And what does it tell us about the book of Exodus as a whole?

Gen 33:10 But Jacob said, “No, I pray you; if you would do me this favor, accept from me this gift; for to see your face is like seeing the face of God, and you have received me favorably. 11 Please accept my present which has been brought to you, for God has favored me and I have plenty.”

The crucial difference between “this gift” and “my present.”

Why does Lev 2:11 have two different words for “leaven” — and what’s wrong with leaven to begin with?

Lev. 2:11

No meal offering that you offer to the Lord shall be made with leaven [חמץ], for no leaven [שאר] or honey may be turned into smoke as an offering by fire to the Lord.

Nahmanides:  … Or perhaps there is some mystery in all of this that escapes us.
